Elina Brotherus is a Finnish artist whose work oscillates between rigorous investigations into art history and autobiographical projects using photography and video. Brotherus takes as inspiration the event scores originally introduced by Fluxus artists in the 60s.
The artist follows instructions or scores and interprets them. This original approach using performances produces images that are surrealist and oftentimes absurd, but full of energy. They represent a liberation from the autobiographical concerns that have been a reoccurring theme for the artist during her career.
Brotherus once again highlights strategies from art history that ricochet in her work, making them imperative to our contemporary context. Their continuity questions the current role of the artist, and enables the viewers to reconsider the nature of art, history, repetition, documentation, authorship, and interpretation.
