Susan Bright, Guest Curator at PHotoESPAÑA 2019

PHotoESPAÑA, the International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts will take place between June 5th and September 1st, 2019.

Within the program of exhibitions and activities of the festival, PHotoESPAÑA, has invited the British curator and writer Susan Bright to be the Guest Curator for the 2019 edition of the Festival.

Bright will commission and curate a series of five exhibitions across museums and galleries in Madrid. These will reflect on traditions and contemporaneity within photographic and artistic practice. She states: ‘For the selection here there is a return to the historical relationship that photography has with painting and also a shift in the way that certain photographs have once been considered but are now cast anew’.

She adds: This reliance on past traditions can be direct in its reference, or can be recast with the idea of influence to something more akin to affinity or allusion. However, what is key to this reinterpretation is a metamorphosis within the work that  deals directly with the function, identity and role of the photographic medium itself.
