Arcadia is an imaginary place created and described by countless poets and artists, referring to a utopia where humans live in communion with nature. The works of Aida Pascual reflect on the supremacy of the natural order over human will, creating a harmonious unity between humans and the landscape around us. The figures—small and lost—are caught up in contemplating the vastness of the landscape, which is the true subject. They show dramatic scenes in its powerful immensity in which the presence of humans is nothing other than proof of our own insignificance. What truly matters is the sky, the sea, the clouds, the trees and especially solitude, meant as an internal, essential human quality, thus shedding its negative connotations. The photographs do not seek to simply show beautiful nature scenes for decorative purposes or conventionally pleasant views but instead to produce calm and contemplation, a sense of time at a standstill, of voluntary exile, a flight from today’s stress and hustle and bustle to immerse the viewer in a state of calmness and reflection.
