A pioneer in taking exhibitions as an artistic medium, the French visual creator Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster is regarded as one of the most influential artists of her generation. Ever since her earliest works from the 1980s, Gonzalez-Foerster has shown a particular interest in the idea of space and time, concepts which are at the core of her artistic career, along with her concern with literature, film, the media and technology. Together they lead to a unique multidisciplinary practice revolving around creating atmospheres, rooms, videos and performances which the artist herself defines as “apparitions”. In her work, the codes of spatial representation are often projected like a theatre stage. The idea is not the autonomy of art but an intimate, immersive, interactive experience with it, in which the viewers have to play an active role.
