Taiwan is a country with post-colonial characteristics, capable of merging cultures from all over the world and generating a local sentiment in the process. It also contributes a transversal, analytical and enriching perspective to the contemporary artists that are reviewing the collective memory of our societies. To this effect, the early works of Hou I-Ting used self-portraits to reflect upon the paradoxical contrasts that different exterior influences have generated in her country.

The guiding theme of this exhibition is the identity of women. On a formal level, the works combine embroidered photographs with video and installations. The use of vernacular photography archives and the embroidery, which is applied to the images in collaboration with other women, underscores the influence of stereotypes present in education and in the representation of what is considered to be feminine in art, inviting the public to question the traditional roles that society assigns to women.
