How can we pay tribute to the fallen in the Spanish Civil War? Where were they? Who were they? What did this war mean to them? These and other questions motivated Luis Areñas to visit small towns across Spain during the past two years, where he was able to photograph some of the last combatants that participated in the war and women who lived through it.

These portraits show people who are now elderly but were once the youth of Spain. The majority of them were between 17 and 18 at the time of the war. Motivated by personal reasons —his grandfather was shot in the war— Areñas has taken a step further to record not only the last faces, but also the testimonies of those men and women. Time may have altered their memories, but the intensity of their emotions remains intact, offering an understanding of this atrocious war that still remains to be a perturbing phantom.
