The exhibition Paul Strand is the launch point for an exhibition program based on own collections. In this case the subject is the most extensive holding of Paul Strand’s work in any European institution: around 100 photographs that allow for an appreciation of the career of one of the key creators within the history of modern photography.
Inspired by Lewis Hine’s social photography and subsequently by Alfred Stieglitz —a pioneering figure in the introduction of modern art in the United States— Strand succeeded in fusing these two influences. He explored photography’s potential as a tool for extending the way we see through his intimate, detailed portraits and by capturing subtle nuances in mechanical and natural forms. Strand investigated the potential of the camera in greater depth than any other photographer prior to 1920, anticipating what would subsequently come to be known as “direct” or “straight” photography.
