With Pure Hands
During the months that Spain was in a state of alarm, workers’ hands filled the cracks in the healthcare system. They are not calloused hands; they are plastic-covered, disinfected hands drenched in sanitiser. They are hands seeking the forbidden touch: hands that dare, hands that pull the virus out from the ill. Hands that care when caring is the most dangerous thing to do.
Anna Surinyach’s pictures show us the reality of the professionals who worked tirelessly to stanch the spread of the pandemic in our country. They are scenes showing volunteers, doctors and nurses performing the ritual of disinfection before attending to an ill patient and after finishing their shift at work. Doctors ill with the disease, admitted to the hospital where they work and cared for by their own colleagues. And infected elderly couples, along with some elderly individuals bearing the disease alone in their homes.
