Be Late for a Pandemic
The photographer Gervasio Sánchez had to cancel several international journeys he had scheduled between March and June, so during that time and throughout the entire state of alarm, he spent his time documenting the pandemic in Aragón for the newspapers Heraldo de Aragón and 20 minutos.
In this series, Sánchez focuses on showing how the coronavirus has dealt a blow to the weakest sectors of society, especially nursing homes or residences for individuals with intellectual disabilities, where the virus’s lethality has been brutal.
Healthcare workers, the true heroes in the midst of the chaos and confusion of the authorities, have worked against the clock to treat the people who caught the disease in order to contain it and prevent the number of cases multiplying among the people who were compromised by previous pathologies.
Sánchez took pictures of people who died just hours later, and he decided not to show their faces out of respect for their family members who were unable to say goodbye to their loved ones in residences, hospitals and funeral parlours. “Never in my professional life have I seen people die in such solitude as in my country”, the photographer concluded.
