Reflections of the Pandemic
The photographer Ricardo García Vilanova believes that a photograph would never be capable of reflecting the horror of a tragedy, yet without them we would have no proof that documents it for our historical memory.
In his “Reflections of the Pandemic” series, the artist captures the greatest catastrophe to befall the world as a whole, and specifically Spain, since the Civil War. It is a tour around the two main hotspots in the social-health crisis in Spain, Madrid and Barcelona: their hospitals, nursing homes—the group that suffered the most—funeral parlours and cemeteries. The official figures of the dead and ill in Spain, coupled with the almost half a million people who died all over the world, far outstrip the daily figures that might be found in any ward with traditional weapons. Meantime, different healthcare sources remind us daily that it is still in its infant stages.
